Who is Jessica Henwick?
Born Jessica Yu Li Henwick under the sign of Virgo on the 30th of August 1992 in Surrey, England, Jessica Henwick is a 25-year-old Asian actress of Singaporean, Chinese, Zambian and English descent. She is perhaps best known to the world for her significant presence on the TV screen in some of her most prominent roles, such as Nymeria Sand in the legendary HBO TV series by G.R.R. Martin entitled “Game of Thrones.” She has also had a number of other roles across various films and TV shows over the course of her often lucrative acting career since 2010.
Early Life: Growing up in Surrey
Jessica was raised in her birthplace, by her Zambian-English father Mark Henwick, who wrote the “Bite Back” novel series, and her Singaporean-Chinese mother of an unknown profession. She has two brothers, though their ages and identities are unknown. As for her education, it is unknown which high school she attended, but matriculated in 2010, and having developed an early interest in acting, then enrolled at Redroofs Theatre School, as well as the National Youth Theatre of Great Britain in London. It is unknown whether she obtained a college education.
Career: A Young Actress
Jessica’s first role (although uncredited) hit the screen in 2009, when she was featured as a Globe Girl in “St Trinian’s 2: The Legend of Fritton’s Gold.” Her first big role and breakthrough was the very next one, as Bo, the lead character in the TV series entitled “Spirit Warriors” in 2010. From 2011 to 2012, she lent her voice to five episodes of the comedy show entitled “North by Northamptonshire.” After three more support roles over the course of 2012, 2013 and early 2014, she appeared in five episodes of “Silk” in 2014. Finally, the next year she became involved in the biggest project of her life thus far, “Game of Thrones,” appearing as Nymeria Sand, the second oldest daughter of Oberyn Martell, the prince of Dorne. Alongside Keisha Castle-Hughes (Obara Sand) and Rosabell Laurenti Sellers (Tyene Sand), she was part of the dangerous ‘Sand Snakes’ trio that later caused a radical change in one of the seven kingdoms. Jessica’s last appearance in “Game of Thrones” was in 2017, but concurrently she had seven other roles, including featuring in 15 episodes of Marvel’s “Iron Fist”, as well as in six episodes of “Defenders”. In 2018, she is involved in a total of four projects thus far, two of which are in post-production.
Love Life: Dating Johnny Yang
As for her romantic involvements, it is known that Jessica has been dating Johnny Yang for the last few years, who is a martial artist and stuntman. Since Jessica herself possesses enviable skill as a martial artist, having been trained in the art of wushu by the martial artist Jude Poyer for “Spirit Warriors”, it is obvious what kind of interest primarily connected the two. She can often be seen in Johnny’s company in her social media posts. There hasn’t been any controversy surrounding their relationship.
A Record Setter
Jessica’s lead role in a British TV series, in “Spirit Warriors” saw her the first actress of East Asian descent in such a position. When interviewed by The New Statesman, she stated: ‘In British TV, if there is an Asian character there usually has to be a reason for them to be Asian, whereas in America you have a lot more roles where the person just happens to be Asian.’
Thoughts on Nymeria
Jessica also took training in using the bullwhip for her role in “Game of Thrones.” When interviewed about this task, she said: ‘Nymeria is the most strategic of the three sisters and I think her whip is very representative of her character. It’s not about brute force with a whip… It’s about balance and timing, precision and accuracy – and all those things are very much Nymeria…Because of our different personalities, we have different ideas of how to get to that point. If Obara has an obstacle she goes right through it, whereas Nym will stop and look back and think ‘What’s the way with which I have to expend the least amount of energy to get through this obstacle?’ She’s observant, I’d say.’
In case you were wondering and haven't seen it yet, Jessica did return as Nymeria Sand in yesterday's season 6 premiere of Game of Thrones!
